The Pellicle Podcast — Series 1

The Pellicle Podcast — Series 1

We are over the moon to announce that the first series of our long-awaited podcast is now available to download or stream via your favourite podcast app. Series 1 of The Pellicle Podcast is a collection of interviews and panel discussions recorded over the past 18 months, cut together with narration (where relevant) and spoken word versions of some of the most popular stories from our website.

These episodes were recorded, edited and produced in their entirety (including the theme tune) by Pellicle co-founder Matthew Curtis, who also serves as the show’s host. Series 1 is definitely us “finding our feet” so to speak, as we extend ourselves from being just a website and into the world of audio. Our hope is that the show adds something a little different to the diverse and exciting world of beer podcasts that are out there already.

The Pellicle Podcast is now available on all major streaming services, including Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, Deezer, Stitcher, Pocket Casts and many more. If you’re unable to find our podcast where you usually like to listen to your favourites, please let us know and we’ll get it submitted there right away.

You can also stream each episode via our website below and even download an mp3, should you wish. We’re thrilled to finally have our podcast out there, and can’t wait to hear what you all think. Be sure to subscribe in your app of choice and leave a review if you’ve time, as this will help more people find the show.

Finally, thanks to all of our Patreon subscribers, as it’s thanks to you that we were able to get this thing done. If you’d like to subscribe yourself click here to do that right now. And if you’re interested in sponsoring series 2 later this year, please drop me an email to matthew@pelliclemag.com. Happy listening!

Ep1 — The Pilot

In our first ever episode, join Pellicle's founders, writer Matthew Curtis and brewer Jonny Hamilton, as they open a few bottles and discuss how they came to start a magazine—in their own typically idiosyncratic fashion.

Ep2 — Chatting Cask with St. Austell's Roger Ryman

Our host ruminates briefly on the importance—nay magnificence—of cask ale, before chatting to Roger Ryman, the head brewer at Cornwall's St. Austell Brewery and creator of Tribute, one of the best selling cask beers in the country. Following the interview Matthew reads his article on another of the UK's great cask ales, Harvey's Sussex Best.

Ep3 — Natural Wine, Lambic and the Joy of Acid

Episode 3 flits between two of our favourite topics: natural wine and lambic: beer's own spontaneously fermented equivalent. In this episode you'll hear from Ola Dabrowska and Duncan Sime of Huddersfield-based natural wine shop Kwas, followed by Karel Boon, heir to the storied Boon brewery in Lembeek, Belgium.

Ep4 — Down to Business with The Real Ale Shop

This is a “lost podcast” of sorts, originally recorded this interview in late 2018 for the Good Beer Hunting podcast. It features Nick Dolan, Zeph King and Tim Peyton of Real Ale, a small, independent chain of bottleshop/bar hybrids.

Ep5 — St. John's Trevor Gulliver Gatecrashes a Breakfast

In this episode I get to visit one of my favourite places in the world—St. John—a place the late Anthony Bourdain described as “the restaurant of my dreams.” A truer statement has seldom been uttered. It features interviews with Will Bucknall of beer distributor Kicking Horse and Trevor Gulliver, co-founder of St. John restaurant.

Ep6 — Leeds Leeds Leeds

This episode is a bumper special: a narrative exploration of one of my favourite cities in the UK — Leeds. This bastion of West Yorkshire is very special to me, and that’s because it’s such a wonderful place to visit and to drink some very fine beer. Featuring Richard Brownhill of Brownhill & Co. and Little Leeds Beer House, Russell Bisset of Northern Monk, Katie Marriot and Mike Hampshire of Nomadic Beer, and Christian Townsley of North Brewing Co.

Ep7 — Where It's At feat. Duration, Verdant and Five Points Brewing

A few months ago I hosted a panel talk at a bar called Five Miles in Tottenham, North London called Where It’s At. It’s intent? To figure out where the UK craft beer industry is at the moment, perhaps taking stock of it in the process and figuring out how it might look in the future. Featuring Adam Robertson of Verdant, Miranda Hudson of Duration and Ed Mason of Five Points.

Ep8 — Beer & Socialism with Unity Brewing's Jimmy Hatherley

This episode is our last in the series—but don’t be upset, we’ll be back with some specials, recorded at last years Fynefest in just a few weeks time. And before then you can enjoy our interview with Jimmy Hatherley, founder of Unity Brewing Co in Southampton.

Editor’s Note: Sadly Roger Ryman of St. Austell Brewery passed away in May 2020. Read our obituary here.
